Overall Experience:  5/5

  • Unlike some of the other venues we have visited I have had no previous experience with this restaurant and took a chance on their many good reviews posted by others. The facility and it's owners lived up to my expectations and beyond with exemplary service and very good food. We entered a packed restaurant on a Tuesday night and we were pleasantly greeted. The hostess who called earlier in the day to confirm our reservation was kind and very pleasant over the phone. The decor of the restaurant exhibits hints of a traditional steakhouse and although it’s a smaller restaurant it has a nice neighborhood feel to it. The outside seating was also packed and looked inviting. Judging by the crowd on a Tuesday night it's no secret that the food here is very good. Steak Masters are first and foremost about good friends enjoying each others company over a good meal. The combination of elements this restaurant put forth made for a very nice get together and great overall experience. I recommend it and would only say that if you don’t appreciate the crowds that usually come with a good restaurant it might be considered a bit loud. That didn’t bother us at all and once we were seated the noise level seemed to fade into the background.

Food:  4/5

  • Town has a nice selection of steaks. They also have a larger selection of alternatives than the more traditional steak houses we have visited. Our appetizers ranged from sushi rolls to cheesy garlic bread and even some delectable deviled eggs. I enjoyed just about everything I tasted and I have to give them credit for successfully pulling off that much variety. For the main course I ordered a Blue Cheese Crusted Ribeye. Our meals arrived in a coordinated fashion, nice and hot and properly cooked to order. The Ribeye at this restaurant is quite a portion of food. You definitely won’t leave here hungry. For me the Blue Cheese crusting was a bit thick and overpowering but that’s more of a personal preference issue. The steak was a nice cut of meat and cooked well. It was juicy and delicious and when I return I will order it again without the crusting. As usual we ordered a variety of side dishes and shared the flavors. Everything was good,  Some of the sides while not traditional to a steak meal were also very tasty. The creamed spinach and potatoes au gratin were two of my favorites. We ordered at least 4 different desserts. Although I didn’t try any of them, they looked wonderful and everyone at the table seemed to enjoy them. Important to point out to prospective patrons that the price points at this restaurant are reasonable and their portions are not skimpy.

Bar/Wine List:  4/5

  • Only reason they got 4 stars here is because we brought our own wine compliments of Mr. Johnson. In keeping with the rest of the experience I'm sure they have a very nice wine list and we did order an additional bottle from their selection which was very good. Incidentally, they were quick to decant the bottles of wine we brought and attentively kept every glass full throughout our meal. To be fair, they had a “heads up” that we were coming but really from the moment we walked through the front door nobody went unattended. Bar service at a packed horseshoe configured bar was great. The bartender was on point and attentive even though it was standing room only on our side. Ambiance in the bar was good and people there were friendly, talkative and all seemed to be having a good time. The bar is smack in the middle of the restaurant which also lends to the noise factor but again a good efficient bartender keeps everybody happy as was the case here. The crowd was a healthy mix of both seasoned and young professionals with a few couples mixed in. Overall a cool vibe and fun place to hang out.

Service:  5/5

  • This rating is saying something in that we did not actually get a Chefs visit to the table. Maybe we are spoiled but we have received some pretty spectacular service at other venues including a regular and customary visit from the Chef. Our waiter was knowledgeable and focused on our experience and our food delivery was prompt and uniform. Questions were answered without hesitation. Recommendations were made and lived up to the description. Our server “Nick” was personable and attentive but did not hover. Wine and water glasses were bottomless and I felt like all you had to do if you needed something was look up and ask. If you go here ask  to be seated at one of Nick’s tables, you won’t be disappointed.

Ambiance:  4/5

  • With respect to other full fledged steak houses across the Bay Area this restaurant is relevant but has less of a traditional steak house feel. It’s more of a community restaurant vibe which is also very inviting. It’s smaller than some we have visited but as I outlined above they rate high with good food and great service. Bathrooms could have been a little cleaner but considering the volume of people they serve they were acceptable. This is a high traffic restaurant, the kitchen is exposed to the diners with multiple chef’s working diligently to get out orders and servers constantly on the move. There is a combination of various booths and tables in the dining areas all of which are comfortable but the restaurant has a very open feel. You have to accept that you are patronizing a busy restaurant so if you are after a quiet romantic experience you may have to make some exceptions.  In my opinion it’s most likely worth it. If you decide to give them a try you should call ahead, We had to make a reservation well in advance and take a later seating time to accommodate our group. All in all a very good experience worthy of a very good review.

Overall Experience:  4/5

  • I’ve never been here or, for that matter, any restaurant in San Carlos, and this was certainly a nice start to the San Carlos dining scene. We had no real specific reception as the place was very busy when we arrived at 8pm, remember this is a Tuesday night. As the place was packed, both the restaurant and the centrally located bar, it’s obvious other people like this place. Town is located on Laurel Street which I assume is one of the places to go for dining in San Carlos as the street and surrounding restaurants looked pretty busy. I liked Town, I’d go again and would certainly recommend it to someone who was in the area and looking for a very good restaurant.

Food:  4/5

  • I think somebody ordered one of everything on the appetizer menu as the table was promptly loaded up with plates of food soon after being seated. I first tried the Deviled Eggs with Crispy Jalapenos. This sounds simple and it was but between the creamy egg filling and the crunchy, spicy jalapeno it was excellent! A couple extra orders of these were placed after the original orders were devoured. I then tried the New Orleans BBQ Shrimp, Philly Cheese Spring Rolls and the Ahi Tuna Roll. The Shrimp and Ahi roll are certainly top performers. The shrimp with freshly toasted bread, spicy and buttery sauce and fresh tomatoes was a great combination and the serrano rings and ponzu, soy glaze on the Ahi roll made it excellent as well. For dinner, I had a Filet and Lobster Tail combo. It was a full 8oz filet and probably a 12-14oz tail. The filet was cooked perfectly and had great taste and texture. I hardly used any of the Bearnaise sauce but was happy with the sauce as well. The lobster was good, but I must believe it was previously frozen. It certainly wasn’t bad by any means, but I’ve been spoiled by fresh shellfish so I may be a bit of a shellfish snob, rarely do I ordered it out. With my main course I had creamed spinach and the garlic chili green beans. The creamed spinach was very good and the green beans with the garlic chili was tasty, but the beans were overcooked a bit.

Bar/Wine List:  4/5

  • The centrally located bar was almost completely full when we arrived with only one or two empty seats gathered around. It took only a moment for the bartender to get to us and then the drinks were flowing, I had two Tito’s and sodas while we were waiting to be seated and both drinks were refreshing and well balanced. Certainly, you feel you’re getting your money’s worth but aren’t thinking you’re having a death drink. The wine list was decent in size and they certainly have a good selection. The pricing seems heavy, but it is the Silicon Valley and the economy is good. You may have to pay for it but I’m sure you can find a bottle you’ll enjoy.

Service:  5/5

  • Nick was our server and he did a fantastic job in my opinion. He was busy but was always able to keep things going at our table. Ours wasn’t his only table but he made it feel like it was. Also, the bartender may have taken a short amount of time to work his way over to us when we first arrived but after that he was on the money and had the drinks flowing. Overall very good service especially for how busy the restaurant was.

Ambiance:  4/5

  • The décor and seating at Town is pretty cool and varied. They have a few tables up front, booths in the back and on the side, counter seating by the kitchen area, a large somewhat horseshoe shaped bar that seat maybe 20+ people and outdoor seat as well. Pretty much something for everyone. They also have TVs at the bar, four I think, which makes it so you could what a game or two while at the bar and maybe from even some of the tables / booths closest to the bar. The TVs are not huge and the sound was down so it wouldn’t be a distraction from a good conversation. They also had a fireplace by the tables in the front that had candles lit in it, giving a bit more comfy feel.

Overall Experience:  4/5

  • Almost FIVE.  This is as close to a Five Star Experience as one can enjoy.  A couple of elements affected my judgment downward a notch, but certainly, the FOOD and SERVICE were both FIVE STAR, if not above.  This is the second time that Wingman—with his daughter Alex—put on a show for the SVSM.  The last time it was this good—was also a Wingman presentation, at Sundance, The Steakhouse.  I’ll tell you, he’s a thoughtful guy who does his homework.  What knocked my experience, a bit, was two primary things.  First, the jammed-jacked condition of the facility.  Certainly, that creates a “there-there” which is, on the one hand great.  It also, particularly around the bar, makes one feel super cramped.  And this on a Tuesday night!!!  Second, the men’s restroom.  It was dirty.  The folks should have a porter tend to it.  Other than that, the people and the food associated with TOWN were magnificent.  You will not be disappointed, at all.

Food:  5/5

  • Let me start with “if I could give it 6 stars, I would”.  From the early appetizers including the spicy tuna roll (which was amazing) to the philly-cheesesteak spring rolls (also amazing with the dipping sauce) and then some—we started out super well.  A great thing at TOWN was that each entrée came with two sides, uncommon at other very nice steakhouses.  I ordered my typical dry aged New York, prepared medium.  It was PERFECT.  Absolutely PERFECT.  I asked for no demi-glaze, as I prefer a steak with just a bit of salt and pepper.  The sides were parmesan broccoli and this amazing yellow corn with crumbled cheese and a bit of spice and lime. OUTSTANDING.  The chef(s) behind the counter should be congratulated on putting out absolutely delicious food.

Bar/Wine List:  4/5

  • The bar service was good and the drink sizes quite good as I had one Tito’s up with a twist.  Nice glasses and a good pour.  Again, the bar area was very busy.  The tenders did a good job in servicing us and were pleasant too boot.

Service:  5/5 +++

  • NICK, NICK, NICK.  What an incredible TOWN team member.  He, together with the entire service team deserve our complete thanks and the highest recommendation possible.  He was informative and OUTSTANDING.

Ambiance:  4/5

  • TOWN is not, necessarily, a dark paneled steak house, though it has splashes of that all around.  It is certainly more “continental” in feel and quite comfortable, really. I previously referenced the men’s room, which shadowed my overall experience.  Again, there was a tremendous amount of activity and noise, but much prefer that to a quiet, non-vibrant environment.  It strikes me as impossible for anyone to visit TOWN and not have a very good, positive and comfortable experience.

Overall Experience:  5/5

  • Another gem discovered by Alex, I mean Gary Christensen. And another excellent overall experience!  I guess I just don’t get out much because I really enjoy these Steak Masters dinners. Most of the Steak Masters were present at this event. Unfortunately, Mozyington was unavailable, doing Lord knows what with who knows who in preparation for something unknown. Sir Wingman arranged transportation in what I believe was a Toyota Sienna minivan, by far the most pedestrian, family friendly form of transportation known to mankind, other than Caltrain, which is what I took to get to Town Restaurant, located in “downtown” San Carlos. Apparently, the official Steak Masters limo tried to kill our beloved Wingman by failing to stop when instructed, pissing him off and costing some poor schmuck his job. Always an adventure. The drinks were plentiful and strong (thank you Jorge), the food was good and abundant, and the whole experience was a great value!  Like Sundance in Palo Alto, Town is a good restaurant, with a very good food at a very good value.  Eight of us ate and drank at the dinner table (not including the separate bar tab) for less than $1,000.  An excellent value on par with Sundance.

Food:  4/5

  • Town is not necessarily a traditional steakhouse.  Although it does have 6 variations of filet mignon and a NY, Ribeye and Prime Rib, always my favorite because I find it to be difficult to prepare at home.  Let someone else do the work.  We started the evening with appetizers. My favorites were the deviled eggs, the spicy tuna rolls (I know, in a steak house) and the New Orleans BBQ shrimp. The BBQ shrimp really stood out.  The red sauce was rich with chunks of tomatoes with just enough spice and delicious enough to ear with a spoon, with or without the shrimp. We skipped the salads at this dinner, the appetizers where so plentiful, so we moved on to the main courses.  I ordered the 10 oz prime rib, medium rare and it was delicious, crusted in garlic and other spices the outside was crisp and flavorful, the fat cap perfectly balanced and the meat tender, juicy and tasty.  It came with a side of creamy horseradish and natural au jus, which was not necessary, the meat was delicious on its own, but in select bites added to the depth of flavors. Unlike most steakhouses, Town’s steaks come with two sides.  Most steakhouses serve their steaks ala carte. I ordered a fully loaded baked potato and Latin style summer corn.  The sides were big enough to be a mean on their own.  The potato was good; the butter, sour cream chives and bacon make anything taste better.  The corn was delicious.  I love Latin style corn.  My favorite is served at Olla restaurant in San Jose, but this recipe might just take first place.

Bar/Wine List:  5/5

  • Town bar was hopping.  Located right in the middle of the restaurant, the bar is really prominent.  There were a lot of people eating at the bar, normally my favorite place to dine. I never met aa bar I didn’t like.  When I arrived, the Masters had just gotten their first drink.  Instead of my usual brown liquor, I conformed with many in the group and had a Tito’s vodka up with olives.  Really simple and delicious.  OK, I had two Tito’s up.  Like I said…delicious.  Thank you, Jorge, for picking up the bar tab!  One of the Masters brought a couple of bottles of MadoroM wines, and they are very good.  I had a glass and then ordered a glass of Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.  I’m a big fan of Pinot, and this was perfect with the Prime Rib.

Service:  5/5

  • Our service was outstanding!  Management must have known we would be a handful, and our server, Nick, was one of the best ever!  Service was prompt and unassuming.  When we wanted to engage with Nick, he was sharp and funny.  And at times, we didn’t even know he was there, which is a compliment.  Again, we’re a handful.  Eight drunk, demanding guys can be a challenge.  Nick must have had help that evening, but the service was so efficient, I didn’t notice.  Once again, the service was outstanding and personal.

Ambiance:  4/5

  • Town is not really a steakhouse, although it has the requisite number of steaks on the menu to meet the Steak masters’ minimum requirements.  The bar is a great place to hang out and have dinner.  Our table was really well located, just off the bar and the exhibition kitchen, and right in the thick of things…just like we like it!  The dining room was blocked by the bar, but frankly I thought our location was fantastic.  We didn’t miss a thing going on in the restaurant.  The ride home in the minivan was just lovely…I could get used to being squired around by the Wingman.

Overall Experience:  4/5

  • Second visit to Town and it was better than I remembered. We had a wonderful table for 9 in the front that had plenty of room for the Steak Masters and our steaks. We had wonderful service and ambiance was very enjoyable. Town is in the sleepy little town of San Carlos, yet the vibe, quality and service are big city good.

Food:  4/5

  • I ordered the bone-in-ribeye and it was absolutely perfect! Tremendous seasoning and cooked to perfection. The sizing and thickness of the steak was just what you should expect for this special cut. Town provided a very well weighted piece of cutlery to delve into the butter soft ribeye. A twice-baked potato and broccolini accompanied the steak and both were very well made and tasted just as they should. All food was served at the correct temperatures which is not always the case and can adversely affect the meal.

Bar/Wine List:  4/5

  • No cocktails, but I enjoyed a very nice glass of Patz & Hall Pinot that resonated very well with my meal. Town’s wine selection is appropriate and complete. Something for everyone’s taste and pocket book.

Service:  5/5

  • Here is where Town really shines. The entire wait staff was friendly, courteous and efficient. Frankly, that is what you should expect at a restaurant of Town’s quality. So the baseline was great, but the bar was raised by our head waiter, Nick. Nick touched all the bases with friendly demeanor, full knowledge of the menu and specials and just was a heckuva good guy. He made it exciting to order the meal. He even went the extra mile to wait with me outside while I was waiting for my Uber. Learned more about him and his story and his love of Town and the restaurant business.

Ambiance:  4/5

  • Great table, nice center bar atmosphere and the crowd noise never inhibited table conversation. I was not overwhelmed by the cleanliness of the men’s room. I am a stickler on this point and am generally surprised at the lack of focus most establishments put into this part of the dinning experience. The best is always a steakhouse with a restroom attendant. At the prices most of them charge one would think they would all employ this service.

  • The Town website writes: “On Father’s Day 2005, we were awoken by the San Carlos Fire Department. After 10 successful years in San Carlos, our restaurant A Tavola was gone. Rather than giving up, we were inspired to create something new from the ashes. One year later, Town opened. While the concept was completely transformed, our core philosophies remained unchanged. Our tag line – “Eat and Drink American” – means a lot to our team. We serve premium steaks and chops, local seafood, handcrafted cocktails, and a wine list that features vineyards from California, Oregon, and Washington. We are proud of our American partnerships, and we hope you appreciate our approach.” Thanks to the stamina and commitment of owners Greg St. Claire, Frank Sanchez and Jeremy Cheng, San Carlos has a great neighborhood restaurant worth a regional visit by the south bay based SVSM. When our quarterly host Wingman proposed it, you could hear a collective groan. The Town rose to the occasion and does what it does by serving up high quality American food with energized service.

Food:  4/5

  • The menu is not Steakhouse classic, but an eclectic variety for a broad set of palettes. We tried the Ahi Tuna Roll, Creamy Cheesy Garlic Bread, and Philly Cheesesteak Spring Rolls. This was a lot of filling starters when you have a steak in your midst, but each was well prepared, flavorful and very good. There were a few more items on the table, but I stopped with these three. I passed on my own salad but forked a few bits of the Calabrese Caesar Salad with a very tangy creamy Calabrian chili dressing. Then for the main event, Bone in Ribeye Steak, 24 oz. Black Angus with salt and pepper crust with a red wine demi-glace. I like mine medium rare, crisped exterior. Mine was cooked to perfection and the meat was fantastic. I rarely finish this many oz’s but this steak was too good to pass up. There were many sides on the table including those I tried, creamed spinach, Down “Town” mac and cheese, brussels sprouts. All great. Dessert was almost too much to handle but the Warm Bread Pudding was hard to pass up. It was incredible with warm maple-brandy sauce and chilled anglaise, perfect. The 6-layer chocolate cake was another standout and I think we had the Banana Pound Cake. It was a gluttonous end to our night, but well worth it.

Bar/Wine List:  4/5

  • The bar experience was short lived, but for the fifteen minutes we spent, a drink was easy to get and well made. I started with the vodka chilled up with lemon. Later I nursed a Barrel Aged Manhattan that Town ages in their own barrels for 14 days with Dickel #8 whisky. The bar is a nice U-shape just steps inside the front door. All seats were filled and there was just enough space to be 2nd from the bar, and still out of the way of diners and servers. This proximity creates a nice interaction between the restaurant and bar.

Service:  4/5

  • Nick was our assigned waiter, presumably by ownership as our host had come in for lunch to introduce our upcoming “official SVSM visit” to The Town. Nick was a standout, definitely top 3 for SVSM. He had great knowledge, good suggestions and was attentive enough without being overwhelming.

Ambiance:  4/5

  • The warmth of the space, exposed kitchen, U shaped bar, main street frontage dining makes for a great restaurant layout. We had a great table location, near the front entry and outdoor seating on a beautiful evening. It was close to the bar and central to the action of this busy establishment. The Town made a good choice to seat our table of 8 in the restaurant, versus trying to stick us in a back room. Typically they don’t reserve for that number, which in my view is a mistake, as a table of 8 brings good energy to the main dining room, and guests at this table won’t be disconnected from the essence of the restaurant. Private rooms are for board meetings, not for a fun night out. Bathrooms were well located, ample and clean.

  • Well I have to preface my upcoming review comments with this disclosure. Tuesday’s are my earliest and toughest days of the week at work. So a late Tuesday night dinner is a bit challenging for me and I am not always at my best.  And the commute from hometown San Jose to San Carlos is a bit of a trek adding to the fatigue and dragging on the attitude.  That said, I walked into the Town with a ho hum attitude that quickly changed to upbeat and positive.  The vibe of the place was awesome. I could not believe that this little restaurant was so crowded and lively on a Tuesday night. The small bar was right at the front door and it was packed full of people. And the dining tables around it were packed full of people drinking and chatting and smiling. Obviously this place is the place in downtown San Carlos. That initial impression made Tuesday melt away and all of a sudden I was in Friday night mode. Great bartender poured the first Vodka Soda Lime promptly and the game was on. My Steakmaster buddies who are always fun seemed to lift up to the same level and the chatter and smiles began. From the initial impression, to the bar visit, to the dinner waiter, to the quality food, this place is a keeper!!  I cant wait to return.  Just know, reservations need to be made well in advance. This does not appear to be a sneak in at the last minute restaurant.

Food:  5/5

  • The appetizers were so good I just wanted more. A bit eclectic but I was great with that. The deviled eggs—an all time, way back from child days favorite, these were some of the best I have ever tasted. Could have just made a meal of the eggs. Then there is the Crispy Garlic Cauliflower which again was exquisite. How did the chef make cauliflower taste so good?   And the garlic was not strong which I am really a fan of.   JC’s California Roll was next in my sampling line. I thought this was a bit weird at a Steak House and I am not usually a fan of boring California Rolls. But this is a Steakmaster tasting event so must try it all. And WOW, to my surprise the roll was excellent. In fact I wanted more roll as well. At this point I am completely bought into this restaurant. But oh yes we need to have the main course. This is the Steakmaster event. We eat Steaks.  So though I was 100% happy with the apps and could have stopped there, or maybe ordered a few more, I need to order a steak. Mmmmm, for main course I enjoyed a perfectly cooked and extremely tasty Crab Crusted Filet. Topped with fresh Dungeness Crab and classic Bearnaise sauce. The crispy broccoli and mushrooms on the side were not just a plate filler. They were yummy. Delicious. Even though I was stuffed full at this point of the meal I still wanted more of this filet.  I will have a hard time choosing a steak other than this when I return here. Oh wait, we still have to have desert. Of course, because we are not full enough at this point our wonderful host Gary orders 3 deserts. All of which were fantastic. A banana bread with Ice Cream, A bread pudding with Ice Cream, and of course set beside me, the chocoholic, a double rich chocolate cake. I did not want to share the cake but finally succumbed to peer pressure and passed the plate to others. All the deserts were very good but oh that cake!!!

Bar/Wine List:  5/5

  • As I mentioned earlier I was impressed with the bar and very pleased with the bartender. Fun and lively and comfortable with great service and good drinks. Does not get a whole lot better. Maybe if a little bigger we could have found a seat but I sure can’t complain about a bar that attracts a full crowd. Well deserved. As for the wine, Steakmaster Brother Mike Johnson brought some really good Madorom wine from Napa Valley for all of us to share. And of course the wine was excellent and did as it should by enhancing the entire meal and evening. Thank you Mike.

Service:  5/5

  • Wherever our Waiter came from they should clone him. He was super polite and listened well. He was on top of every need immediately. He was aware of our table at all times and hustled to serve. His meal recommendations were spot on and his conviction about his choices made choosing easy.  Please let me have this waiter again. Fantastic!!!

Ambiance:  4/5

  • I mentioned this in my opening statement. Fun, lively, warm, homey, comfortable, welcoming.  An excellent place to visit and let your Tuesday melt away into smiles.  Great choice by our awesome Host Wingman.

Overall Experience:  4/5

  • Before I got to Town, I had been told of a mediocre experience there, so I was going to make my judgement carefully. But from the moment our group walked in, we “were taken care of”.  Great experience, enjoyed the atmosphere, libations and the steaks.  Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the joint!

Food:  4/5

  • I had a great “requested” combo of a New York Steak and the BBQ Ribs. Both fabulous! Perfectly moist and both melted in my mouth.  Highly recommend both.  I had sides of roasted broccoli, creamed spinach, garlic mashed potatoes and the zucchini noodles. All terrific, but being the resident Irishman, the mashed potatoes were my favorite.

Bar/Wine List:  4/5

  • Once again, we were taken care of quite well at the bar when we first arrived.  I had two very crisp Martinis with 3 olives and they were crisp as well.  I’ll be honest, I don’t remember the wine that I’m sure one of our members brought to share, because I was focused on the food, but I do remember, the food and drink experience was spectacular.  A large group of good friends, a fine establishment serving great food and hgw can you better spend a weekday night???

Service:  4/5

  • Nick, our server, was awesome, including making sure I had written notes to me so I wouldn’t forget what I ate. Thanks Nick!  It isn’t easy taking care of a large group like ours, but Nick handled it with ease.  The bartender, who I didn’t catch his name, was on top of things that night also. So nothing but prompt, efficient service all around.

Ambiance:  4/5

  • Great location, great look outside and in. Right when we walked in the place was humming and packed.  Great sign of a great spot to eat.  If you are in the area, The Town is a steak joint you need to check off the bucket list!!  Cheers
